Functions as Deputy Group leader of TT: Implementation of a CERN proactive Technology Transfer Policy. The work involved: Identifying, developing and communicating technical innovations to industry and to scientists in various fields. Interaction with CERN technology developers, managers and experts from industry.

 

Functions as Section leader in TT Promotion and TT Studies: Responsible for: 1) Setting up the strategy and implementation for promotion of CERN technologies. 2) Responsible for setting up the program, the material and participation to TT promotional events. 3) Definition and implementation of the new Web pages for advertising CERN technologies and activities. 4) Interaction with Internal and External Networks for collecting and providing information on technologies and projects. 5) Supervision of TT Studies and Master and PhD Thesis. The subjects are: -Knowledge transfer in LHC experiments, project with Helsinki University.-Technology assessment and pricing, Master thesis at NTNU, Norway. -Entrepreneurial behaviour, PHD thesis at the University of Turin, Italy.

 

Functions as Section leader in TT Operation: Responsible for: 1) Negotiation of the terms of contracts both with Industry, inventors and technical coordinators. 2) Establishment of such contracts and follow-up in collaboration with the legal advisor. 3) Realization and follow-up of commercial opportunities. 4) Interaction with the internal network for collecting information on technologies and TT projects. 5) Establishment of a formal procedure for market and technology assessment. 6) Making sure that the intellectual property of the organization is adequately protected. 7) Assessment of the information from the inventor(s) before request for a patent is submitted to the Technology Advisory Board.    8) Responsible for the analysis, implementation and description of working procedures. 7) Responsible as TT Officer for the transfer of several technologies dealt with by the TT Group.8) Supervision of  a PhD Thesis from Helsinki University "A study of the research and development benefits to society resulting from an international research centre, CERN"; of an MOT Thesis at EPFL, Lausanne on  "From purchasing goods and services to pro-active technology transfer and partnership" and of a Master Thesis from NTNU "A study on inter-organizational knowledge transfer within multinational R&D collaborations".

·         First empirical study examining the distinctive characteristics of big-science centers as learning environments and documenting the learning potential of CERN for its industrial suppliers (Annex 1). Results presented at FC of  September 2003.

·        Proposal to analyze the innovation process at CERN and characteristic mechanisms to optimize the return benefits from purchasing.

q       Technical Inspections & Safety Division: Safety Activities (1983-1999)

Functions as Group Leader of TIS-FB (January 1997-June 1999): Establishment of interaction at Department level and establishment of formal collaboration with the local French and Swiss Fire brigades (joint training, combined intervention, exercises etc.). Intervention Alarm system: analysis and optimization. Establishment of appropriate fire control safety measures in preparation of LHC site work. Establishment of the training program for LHC work-site rescue. Preparatory work for a CERN General Emergency Intervention Plan. Implementation of a detachment policy to rejuvenate the service with trained fireman from European Fire brigades while facing substantial staff complement reduction.

·  Improved training and practice for confined fire conditions and for ambulance interventions.

·  Administrative supervision of the 63 members of the Group.

Functions as TIS Divisional Planning Officer (1991-June 2000): Assistant on Financial and Human resources matters to 3 TIS Division Leaders. Financial and human resource planning and follow-up for a division of about 150 staff, 5 Groups. Participation to the Long Term Plan (LTP) Working Groups. Member of the Working Group aiming at the establishment of Periodic Review and Performance Appraisal in the Organization.  Member of the Skill Inventory Working Group defining the information to be collected from Staff Members and made available to Personnel Division for keeping track of  their developed skills and for career planning purpose. Member of the Budget Planning Group (BPG) and of the Administrative Liaison Committee (CLA).

Functions as Divisional Training Officer (1988-1997): Contribution to the definition of the DTO function at CERN. DTO for TIS Division: implementation follow-up and reporting of training actions to Division and Group Leaders. Establishment of training curriculum for the Staff.

Functions as Joint Training Board Member (1993-1999): Member and Advisor to the JTB on Safety Training matter. Contribution to the conception and launching of first management courses for CERN Supervisors. Contribution to draw Training Policy recommendations for the Organization.

·         The use of video as support tool revealed to be an extremely efficient and economic way, (material cost and man power) which allowed to satisfy the legal obligations of the laboratory. Participants to the course between November 1985 to December 1990: 3730 contractors and 4390 CERN staff and users working in LEP underground areas, mobilising for the training only 2 staff full time.

 

Additional responsibilities:

Secretary of Divisional Safety Officers Committee (1992-1999)

The Secretariat of the Divisional Safety Officers Committee, including minutes of the meetings, was ensured from 1992 until December 1999.

CERN Archives (1993-2002)

 Realization of a project on Oral History to preserve CERN Memory and understanding of the Organization development and achievements for the Archives Committee. Interviews of 36 personalities (Annex 2 and Annex 4).

Second Economic Utility Study (1982-1984)

·        A main reference of the TT spill-over effect from purchasing at international level.

Participation in the Second economic utility study from CERN Contracts to evaluate  the impact on the turnover of the firms due to technology development, new products, marketing impact and quality control improvements following interaction of the firms with CERN. (Annex 5, 5.1c)

Collaboration with Microcosm and for Open Days (1979-2000)

Making of film on OPAL and CERN for the Microcosm visitors.  Publications made with Prof. Giacomelli for students (see Annex 2, 2.3; Annex 5, 5.1d, 5.2.45 and 5.2.46). Preparation of stands and support material for all CERN Open Days, member of the Organizing Committee (1998) and guide for L3 Experiment (2000).

q       Radiobiological Activities. Health Physics & Radiobiology Group(1969-1983)

Functions as Researcher: Pioneer on the study of applications of high energy hadrons to Radiotherapy and European expert on the effects of high energy radiations for Radiotherapy use. Research specialist for the study of low dose and low dose-rate radiation and effects on germ cells. Participation to the first PET study at CERN. Responsible for the establishment of collaboration with ENEA,  SIN (PSI-Villigen), Paterson and Gray Laboratories. Responsible for selection of biological end point, planning of experiments, biological data taking and analysis. CERN contact with expert in the field of radiobiology and cancers research.

Responsible for the selection of the biological experiments to be carried out using high-energy particle beams with the aim of determining the biological parameters

of relevance for Radiotherapy. Responsible for the planning of experiments, biological data taking and analysis.

·        Supervision of technicians, summer students and several technical students for Master Degree and PhD students.

v                 Recent studies with the Paterson Institute for Cancer Research in Manchester on the effects of radiations on germ cells in mutant P53 mice strains (posters presented at the International Congress for Radiation Research in 1995 and 1999). The P53 genes expression is of importance in cancer research as when this gene expression is impaired it give rise to a giant cell degeneration syndrome called apoptosis(Annex 5, 5.1 and 5.2).

Technology Transfer and technological learning through CERN's procurement activity”.

Study carried out in collaboration with. E. Autio Professor of Technology Transfer at Helsinki University of Technology and A.P Hameri, Professor at HEC, Lausanne University.

 Preparation and execution of the study to analyse the technology fallout in Member States Industry and Technology Transfer benefits from technology based projects for the period 1997-2002.

  Contribution to:

a) Definition of the parameters to be studied and of the sample study.

b) Timetable and set-up of the various stages of the project.
